Save $650, built your own media storage unit for your TV

A while back I posted about a cool way to hang your TV without drilling a ton of holes in your wall.  It also allows you to hide all your cables behind the unit so you get a great look while providing great functionally.  It’s based on the Muro Media storage unit that I posted about, but the unit to purchase cost $650 and since it’s coming from Italy, it’s pricetag is over $700 with shipping.  So my dad and I decide to build one from the images they provided and I have to say and it came out great.  We spent about $200 in equipment and parts which included buying an $80 Dewalt router and drill bit for the router to make the shelf slits.  In actual materials the total cost was around $80.

We painted the whole unit the same color as the wall it’s hanging off of.  My wife’s professional opinion was the deciding factor.  Of course  you can color/stain the MDF used any color you’d like if you want the unit to pop off the wall.  Also, you can wallpaper it if you prefer.

I’ve put a bunch of descriptions on the individual pics below if you click through them so you can see how we built it plus measurements of the pieces.  If you’d like to build one and have any questions, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you with answers.  Click through the pics to see my instructions for each step:

UPDATE: I’ve put the blueprints for the unit in another post, check it out here

Yo, we might be in the wrong line of business!

Hey, great job on this! Looks almost identical to the original….

I was just wondering how exactly you mounted this to the wall. Did you use any brackets or dry wall anchors?

Thanks for all the step by step photos… looking forward to trying this out!

Great setup and some very impressive DIY. Doing your own setup is far more rewarding than going out and buying one, plus you don’t have to worry about any costs. Lets not forget that it looks exactly how you want it to either!

So to attach it to the wall, I bought a double side 7 inch screw. Its a screw at one end that goes into the wall stud, and the other end is a bolt. Then I bought a coupler, the coupler comes through the wall unit, just to the edge of the wall unit, and I bolt it in with a huge washer. I’ll add photos for it.

Ray, send me an email and I’ll send you the pics!

    Hi Eric,

I do have the plans on paper, let me create something digital to share it out. I’ll copy you on the post when I can post it up. Give me a day or so.

    Thanks,

Glad you liked the post! Let me know if you need more details or have questions about how I built it, and if you build one, I’d love to see the pictures!

  12. Hiding places

I think back how the TV was once the center point of a living area, family room. Now we tend to hide it more piratical. I still live in the 70′s where entertainment center. I really like your idea but its more of a man cave then it is a family gathering to watch movies where are the sectionals, sofa recliner go?
