App_Offline.htm and working around the IE Friendly Errors feature

if you try to use the app_offline.htm file, you’ll probably have very little code in it to show your “Site is down” message.  This causes an issue in IE as the “server returns a non HTTP-200 status code with less than 512 bytes of content, IE will not show the returned HTML and instead substitutes its own generic status code message”

Thus to fix it, you can put in more content to get the size of the file over 512 bytes as such:

<!–
Adding additional hidden content so that IE Friendly Errors don’t prevent
this message from displaying (note: it will show a “friendly” 404
error if the content isn’t of a certain size).

This is just a comment which the user will never see, but will help you get over the 512 byte mark.
I found this solution here (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/04/09/App_5F00_Offline.htm-and-working-around-the-_2200_IE-Friendly-Errors_2200_-feature.aspx), so a big shoutout to them for making it so easy to find!!!

Wheat Thins Twitter Commercial

I was watching The Next Food Network Star last night and saw this commercial for Wheat Thins. I’m generally not a fan of commercials – I find them annoying especially when I’m waiting to hear if Brad’s decadent lamb chops were enough to keep him safe after his horrendous speech to the foodie group. Anyway – the folks at Wheat Thins created a GREAT commercial. True or not (I’m hearing reports it’s not entirely true) the commercial speaks to the power of social media, in this case: Twitter. Wheat Thins aficionado, Tabitha Hancock, (@fox_girl313) posted , “AAAHHH Im outta wheat thins… Mi life is officially over,”- and Wheat Thins brought an entire giant palette of wheat thins to her house. You see Tabitha open the door to this huge palette sitting on her driveway with the delivery man telling her she’ll never have to worry about running out of Wheat Thins ever again.

My boyfriend and I just looked at each other in shock debating for the next 10 minutes about whether that was an actual true story or not. My claim: true. His? Not so much…

It seems Tabitha actually posted that claim on FB and not Twitter, the company reached out to her aunt, etc. etc. White lie or not, this commercial was definitely a success from a marketing/PR standpoint.  And let’s see…it’s making me think about tweeting how I’m out of Edy’s Girl Scout’s Somoas Ice Cream. Too bad I don’t have a freezer for an entire palette of that stuff!

The Local Wisdom Referral Program

You love working with Local Wisdom.

You also know we have the best talent in the great State of New Jersey.

Now you can help share us with the world.

I’m pleased to announce the Local Wisdom Referral Program (Sorry, no fancy acronym).

The Referral Program is pretty simple:

Tell people about Local Wisdom. For every qualified lead you give us, we will give you $100. A qualified lead is an opportunity that generates a Sales Discovery Meeting. A Sales Discovery Meeting is a chance for us to meet with the potential client to learn about their needs.

If we are able to close the deal you will receive a 2% commission of the of the total project budget. This commission will be given to the referrer upon receipt of final payment from the project.

As an added bonus, you will also receive our eternal love and gratitude.

For more information view our expertise or see some of our recent work.

If you have any questions, or would like to submit a lead you can contact me at dlarane@localwisdom.com.

Table of Contents for Omnigraffle

The Dutch interaction designers over at Unitd have recently made a new post about a major pet peeve many of us have: creating a Table of Contents for Omnigraffle wireframes.

A simple ApplesScript allows you to create an on-the-fly Table of Contents in your document.

Download the script here!

There is a great guide on the same site on how to install it. I’ve started using it and have customized it to match the Local Wisdom templates we use – it’s great, and shaves time off of this routine task.

HotGloo – Collaborative Wireframing

The other day I did a Google search for ‘cloud-based wireframing tools’ and I somehow found HotGloo. Having gone through the ‘wireframing ropes’ (hacking my way through wireframes on Illustrator before finding Omnigraffle, and now searching for the next best thing…) I was intrigued. What makes HotGloo different from other tools out there:

  • Truly collaborative – You can setup multiple projects where different people can be online collaborating and adding things in realtime
  • No software to download – everything is browser-based (I know there are some browser-based IA tools, but none that I have found that focus on the wireframing process)
  • No need to backup – it’s all done for you

Some of the things I am leery about are minor, but still important when you need to produce production ready documents, such as:

  • Custom stencils – Time spent on uploading custom images / stencils – this isn’t as easy as Omnigraffle
  • PDF export – HotGloo has a ‘one button’ function, and I can’t seem to add variables like I do in Omnigraffle (such as page numbers, dates, etc.)
  • Learning curve – Learning curve might be steep for making clickable interactions amongst all collaborators, and cut into billable hours.

Basically, I wonder how production-ready it is. I’d like to try it out on a smaller project and see how the collaborative-process truly holds up.

Touch Gesture Reference Guide

As an interface and interaction designer, one of the new frontiers is touch-based, mobile applications. The problem is, how do you convey this in a wireframe or spec document for both programmers (and clients) to understand?

Users are no longer just clicking once to activate a link or send a form. A great new stencil set for Omnigraffle provides a way to communicate touch gestures, such as dragging, tapping, and sliding. You should check it out! You can download the graphic here.

Olivia Munn and Big Latin, the Dynamic Duo!!!

Olivia Munn and Big Latin AKA Mike

It was a humid day and took 4 hours of waiting in line, but it was worth it!   The time went by very quickly as I got to catch up on life with Valiant (his pic here), and when we finally got to meet Olivia, she was very pleasant and talkative with all the people that came out to see her, very cool indeed :)

I’d love to tell a story about how I woo’ed her with my electrifying personality and that we cut a deal right on the spot to have Olivia endorse Local Wisdom by allowing us to redesign her website, but then I’d be lying.  I was really more of  a deer caught in headlights as I didn’t really think ahead of time of what I wanted to say to her.  Overall she was really cool, spent more time with each fan then you’d think.  You could tell that she’s had a long day, or “a long year” as she said when I asked her about her day, but she’s really appreciates all her fans who helped make the book deal possible.

If you’d like to see if she’s coming to your city check out her schedule here.  I would suggest going to the signing if you are a fan.  As far as the book itself, I haven’t had time to read much of it yet, but I’m making time this week to read it instead of watching some of my nightly DVR shows :)  I’ll post a review after I’m done.

Hopefully Olivia or her people will read this post and contact Local Wisdom to design her website and bring the Dynamic Duo of Olivia Munn and Big Latin AKA “Mike” together again!

A unique website for a unique restaurant

WestCoastSubs.com - Local Wisdom Design and Development Work

The Challenge
Family owned and operated, West Coast Subs brings the fresh, surf style of California to Toms River, NJ. Residing next to the family’s fashion boutique, The Cali Way (http://thecaliway.com), the owners of West Coast Subs needed to focus their efforts on quickly opening two storefronts. They contacted Local Wisdom to design and develop a site boasting West Coast Subs’ fresh and healthy ingredients along with its Cali flair. Before beginning we sampled the food, and they are accurate; the food is great.

Design
Renowned for its surfing aficionados and health conscious residents, California is the true inspiration behind West Coast Subs. Our design experts were able to create a surf-style aesthetic that complements the shop’s healthy and fresh menu, while highlighting the owner’s passion for the ocean and all things surfing. We built the site using Jquery to provide users with a fun and compelling interface.

Development
Without sacrificing design quality, we were able to develop a site for West Coast Subs, which would deploy in two stages. We shared in the company’s urgency to have a web presence, deploying the first stage of the site to showcase their menu. This put West Coast Subs on the map allowing the site to begin impacting search results, maximizing its customer potential. Next, we tackled the full spectrum, rounding out the full content migration along with design nuances which speak to the shop’s surf-style atmosphere.

How did it go
Being nimble for a customer is core to our philosophy. We were able to share in the client’s urgency and launch the menu stage of WestCoastSubs.com within two weeks then complete the development of the larger site. The rapid deployment, professional design, and local buzz exceeded the client’s expectations.
